The Mountain Brook Wildlife Preserve extends east and north from the corner of Phelps Road and Copper Hill Road in West Suffield. The property extends eastward from Copper Hill Road on both sides of Mountain Brook with the southerly section north of the properties on Old Farms Lane. Access to the property is through the parking area located on Copper Hill Road. There is a blazed trail running along the south side of Mountain Brook through the mowed field to the eastern end of the property. A second trail loops from the wooden sign through the woodlands and an old orchard.
This 27 acre property was offered to the conservancy in August, 1994 by John Coccomo who had bought the larger tract form the Culbro Corporation with the intention of developing it under the name of Newgate Farms LLC. Extensive site testing was done prior to the acquisition as Culbro had used a small portion of the property as a farm dump and there was concern that it may be potentially contaminated. Mr. Coccomo, President of Newgate Farms LLC, paid for all the necessary ground water and soil testing. The site was subsequently found safe from any contamination.
The Mountain Brook Wildlife Preserve is primarily wetlands with most of the land on each side of the brook somewhat walkable. There is a small island in the north east portion that is accessible in dry seasons. A two acre field has been kept mowed on the south side of the brook to provide habitat diversity. Wood Ducks, Black Ducks, Mallards and Herons inhabit the brook and evidence of beaver has been seen. Grouse have also been seen in the clearings and the American Bittern, a Connecticut endangered species, has been reported in the area. Trees are primarily red maple, black cherry, white pine and eastern red cedar. Some of the larger pines are found in the southeast corner of the property. The New England WIldflower Society conducted a botanical survey in 2004, identifying no state listed plants.
